What is Aqualyx®?

Aqualyx® is a phosphatidylcholine-free solution, which contains Sodium Deoxycholate: an agent whose primary objective is to break down fat cells. It does this by emulsifying the membrane of the adipose cell wall.

Aqualyx® promotes cellular lysis of the fat cell, so the body’s macrophage system can dispose of the remnants of the broken fat cell – leading to the lymphatic system to drain and clean up the mess.

The final outcome is the permanent removal of the destroyed fat cell and overall improvement of the treated area.

Is Aqualyx ideal for you?

If you are suffering with stubborn pockets of fat, which are unresponsive to normal metabolic processes, such as exercising and maintaining a low calorie diet, then Aqualyx is the perfect treatment for you.

An ideal patient would be someone who is exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy calorie deficit diet and losing fat overall, apart from a few stubborn places, such as the double chin, lower pockets of abdominal fat, hips, buttocks and thighs, then this would be the ideal treatment.

Things to Know

An Aqualyx® injection is a virtually painless treatment, but with any medical treatments there are certain factors which need to be considered.

Let us tell you what to expect before, during and after the treatment.

After

After the procedure is done there are some things you need to be aware of.

  • Swelling: This starts off small but within 24-48 hours gets larger (as the fat cells are destroyed) before eventually being taken away by the lymphatic system and out of the body
  • Bruising: With any injection, there is a chance of this, but will settle in a few days.
  • Discomfort: We advise a simple analgesic, such as paracetamol, to help relieve this.
  • Avoid contact sports: You don’t want to trigger the treated area for at least a week or two.
  • Massage the treated area: Will help alleviate the discomfort and promote absorption. Gently massage twice a day for two weeks.

The doctor may give you specific instructions, so please be sure to follow them. And if you experience any discomfort or unusual side effects, don’t hesitate to contact us right away.

Before

To maximise your outcome and make sure everything goes smoothly, we recommend following these simple guidelines before your fat-dissolving injections:

  • If you have any health concerns that require medications, please discuss them with us for a safe and personalised treatment.
  • Refrain from smoking for a few days leading up to the procedure.
  • Hold off any skin procedures treatments at the treatment site.
  • Avoid alcohol for a minimum of two weeks before the procedure.

During

We apply numbing cream to the area to be treated.

During the treatment, small microdroplets of Aqualyx® are injected into the area, directly targeting the fat cells. This causes a reaction where the fat cell’s membrane is broken down.

In combination with the Aqualyx® injection, localised swelling of the area is a normal response.

Unsuitable Patients

For Aqualyx® fat dissolving injections, we do not recommend treatments for anyone who:

  • has active or any systemic pathology in the treatment area
  • severe autoimmune disease
  • immunocompromised condition
  • is pregnant or breastfeeding

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Aqualyx®  is the only drug approved by the European Union for the reduction in localised fat cells.

No. During the treatment, you may experience a tingling or warming sensation, but it is not described as painful. We apply a numbing cream to the treatment area and ensure our experienced doctors provide a soft handed approach whilst injecting your fat cells.

Yes. Once the fat cells have been destroyed and taken up by the lymphatic drainage system, they will not be coming back. We advise avoiding gaining weight as this can sometimes mask the results. But as long as you stay the same weight, the results will be long-lasting.

Some patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, or mild tenderness in the treated area, but these usually subside. Basic analgesia, such as paracetamol, can help.

Generally no – with correct patient selection. If you have a large area that needs to be treated and already have some loose skin, then we advise for this treatment to be carried out with our skin tightening treatments, such as Endymed RF.

You can find more information about this on our ‘Treatments‘ section under ‘Skin Tightening‘.

No. Aqualyx® is designed to treat stubborn pockets of fat – not overall weight loss. For this, we suggest looking at our ‘Health and Wellness‘ section under the ‘Weight Loss ‘ management page.

Depending on the treatment area size, stubbornness and overall patient health, we recommend 1-3 sessions.

Generally, if you are suffering with stubborn pockets of fat – that are unresponsive to normal metabolic processes, such as exercising and maintaining a low calorie diet, then Aqualyx® is the treatment for you.
