What is Botox®?

How Does it Work?

So, how does it work?

During a Botox® treatment, small microdroplets of the botulinum toxin are injected into specific muscle groups using a tiny needle.

Whether used for migraines, anti-ageing, or jaw clenching, the mechanism of action remains the same. Botox® temporarily inhibits the nerve signals in the targeted muscles, causing them to relax and reducing contraction.

The result?

Reduced migraines, muscle spasms, jaw clenching, and a more youthful, smoother-looking complexion.

Cosmetic Botox®

Did you know that cosmetic Botox® can address a variety of skin needs and concerns?

Some of the most targeted areas for Botox® injections include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Eyebrows
  • Frown lines, also known as Glabellar Lines
  • Under-eye lines, or Infra-orbital lines
  • Crow’s feet, at the sides of the eyes
  • Chin puckering
  • Smile lines, or smoker’s lines, above the lip
  • Jawline and masseter muscles, for a slim and refined face
  • Necklines, or Nefertiti lines, to smooth away signs of ageing around the neck
  • Nose Tip lift, to lift up the tip of the nose
  • TRAPTOX, a new beauty trend to reduce a bulky neck and reshape the trapezius muscles, or ‘the traps’, as they’ve been nicknamed.

Medical Botox®

Botox® has a range of medical applications that can provide relief from some common health concerns and significantly improve quality of life.

Ways that Botox® can be used medically include:

  • Hyperhidrosis. If you struggle with excessive sweating – particularly in the underarms, palms, and feet, Botox® can keep the condition at bay anywhere from 6 to 18 months in most of our clients.
  • Migraines. If you suffer from frequent migraines Botox® injections around the scalp and neck can provide relief. Botox® for migraine treatment is recognised by the NICE (National Institute of Clinical Guidelines) in the UK, where it’s becoming increasingly common.
  • Bruxism or teeth grinding. Botox® injections in the masseter and jaw muscles can significantly reduce clenching – plus the pain and discomfort that comes with it.
  • Shoulder pain. If chronic shoulder pain is bothering you, Botox® injections in the shoulder area can temporarily ease the discomfort.
  • Muscle spasms. Botox® injections have also been proven effective for various types of muscle spasms.

Things to Know

Before, During and After the Procedure

During

The Botox® procedure involves injections administered to the targeted areas.

Prior to the procedure, you’ll need to remove any makeup or facial products.

We’ll then cleanse your skin, apply a numbing cream to the treated area, and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.

Typically, we’ll perform a series of injections, around four to five at each site.
Once the area is numbed, we use a small needle to inject the Botox®. The number of doses will be determined based on the extent of the issue and your cosmetic goals. To minimise bruising and bleeding, we may apply slight pressure after each injection.

After

Following the procedure, you’ll be given a short break of approximately five minutes.

We’ll then give you personalised aftercare instructions based on your specific health condition, if any.

When you arrive for your Botox® appointment, we will:

  • carry out a thorough consultation
  • assess your facial symmetry
  • discuss your cosmetic goals
  • address any concerns you may have.

You will be guided through the procedure and recommend the best course of action for you.

Before receiving the treatment, you’ll have specific precautions to follow and advise you on necessary preparations.

Preparing for Botox® is a straightforward process.

Just like with any injection, you’ll only need to refrain from taking any drugs or blood-thinning medications a few days before and after the procedure. If you have any medical conditions, please discuss them with us to ensure a safe and tailored treatment.

Aftercare Tips

Botox® is a convenient outpatient treatment that requires very little downtime.

This means that you can resume your normal activities soon after the procedure. However, it’s advisable to take it easy afterwards.

To ensure a smooth and successful recovery and minimal bruising, there are a few simple precautions we recommend following:

  • No rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24/48 hours.
  • No drugs and alcohol for at least 24 hours.
  • No lying down flat for a few hours after the procedure.
  • No sleeping on your face for the first night.
  • No strenuous exercise, that may increase blood flow to the face, for 24 hours.
  • No excessive heat exposure. Use sunscreen with a high SPF to protect the treated area.
  • No facial treatments for 24 hours after treatment.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Be patient and allow the Botox® to take effect, as it can take 7-10 days to see the desired results.

As a rule of thumb, follow any specific instructions given to you. If you experience any discomfort or unusual side effects, please reach out and let us know immediately.

Results

When Will I See Results and How Long Will They Last?

Botox® is a quick procedure that only takes around 15 minutes.
You’ll start noticing visible effects after about seven days, although the time it takes to settle varies from person to person. In most cases, it can take up to two weeks for the results to reach their full effect.

Typically, the effects of Botox®last between three to six months – depending on individual factors and the treated area. For most of our patients, the treated area remains wrinkle-free for up to six months.

It’s important to note that Botox® is a temporary procedure, meaning that, over time, muscle activity gradually returns, and wrinkles may reappear.

To ensure optimal results, you’ll be offered a free top-up appointment in two weeks to fine-tune the treatment and address any concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. When administered by a trained and qualified medical professional, Botox® is generally considered safe. However, disclosing any medical conditions or allergies to your healthcare provider before treatment is essential to minimise potential risks.

Like any medical procedure, Botox carries some risks. You can have mild and temporary side effects, including pain or swelling at the injection site, bruising, headache, muscle weakness or flu-like symptoms. Inexpert injecting may sometimes lead to frozen faces, and at times limited movement, dropped eyelids and crooked smiles. While serious side effects are rare, they can still occur.

At My London Skin Clinic, we prioritise the safety and effectiveness of our treatments, to minimise the risk of infections, complications and unsatisfactory results.

When administered by a skilled professional, Botox® should not make your face look unnatural. The goal of treatment is to achieve a natural-looking result by relaxing specific muscles to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. It’s important to choose a qualified and experienced professional to ensure the best outcome.

Botox® injections are generally well-tolerated and cause minimal discomfort. Some people may experience a slight pinch or stinging sensation during the injection, but it is usually brief. Our Botox treatments are internationally renowned for being virtually pain-free. Our expertise and dexterity are unmatched and the needles we use are very fine – designed to minimise discomfort. A topical anaesthetic is typically applied to numb the area before the procedure to reduce any potential pain.

Yes Botox® can significantly reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, but some deeper ones may take longer and require other treatments to completely eliminate them. The effectiveness of Botox® varies on factors such as the depth of the wrinkles and individual response to the treatment. Our team of professionals will be able to determine the expected results based on your specific situation.

Yes. Botox® can be used preventatively to minimise the formation of wrinkles. Some individuals choose to start Botox® treatments at a younger age to proactively slow down the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Yes. It is often used in conjunction with dermal fillers to address different aspects of facial ageing, like volume loss and dynamic wrinkles.

The frequency of Botox® treatments varies from person to person. On average, Botox® injections are repeated every three to four months to maintain the desired results. However, the exact timing may depend on the individual’s response to the treatment and the area being treated.

No. The suitability of Botox® treatment depends on individual factors such as skin condition, overall health, and the presence of any contraindications. During your consultation, we’ll assess your specific situation and provide personalised advice. We do however avoid treating anyone under the age of 18, unless there is a medical indication to do so.

The decision to start getting Botox® is a personal one and depends on individual circumstances. While there is no set age to start Botox®, some people begin treatments in their 20s or early 30s as a preventive measure. Others may start later when wrinkles become more noticeable. Our team will thoroughly assess you and recommend only the most appropriate time and course of action for you.

Botox® is generally safe for most adults. However, it may not be suitable for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, have certain neurological disorders or are allergic to any ingredients in Botox®. Our team of doctors can discuss any contraindications with you.

No. The effects are temporary, and regular treatments are required to maintain the desired results. However, consistent use of Botox® over time may help to train the muscles, resulting in longer-lasting effects. The good news is if you decide the results dont suit you, then rest assured it will wear off gradually and you will be back to your prior treatment self.
